President’s Message

Franklin Fuchsia Group E

As I put pen to paper and gather my thoughts, what comes to mind are memories of the first Fuchsiarama and AGM that I attended along with a few Franklin Fuchsia Group members. It was held in Methven and hosted by Ashburton. Our Franklin group were welcomed into the Fuchsia Family as an affiliated group of the National Fuchsia Society of New Zealand. I never dreamt that 7 years later, again at Ashburton, I would became the Society’s Secretary, and now 14 years later at our recent AGM in Ashburton I have been nominated as the Society’s New President. I’m honoured to be your President and thank you for the privilege.

2018 Fuchsiarama and our 34th AGM were hosted by Ashburton  Fuchsia  Group at the Ashburton Hotel Complex on Saturday 1yth March 2018. It truly was a wonderful weekend of Fun, Friendship, Food, & Fuchsias. The weekend began with May Sandford, Ashburton President, welcoming 60 attendees from affiliated groups.

President Frances Burrus chaired the 34th AGM with proceedings running  smoothly and the Executive reports were well  received.  Frances  welcomed  two new  groups into the Society as affiliated members, Milton as a new group and South Otago with a change of name from Waitahuna.

On the business side of the meeting, a remit was passed unanimously to advise the Charities Services that NFSNZ no longer wishes to be registered as a charity. Thank you to Peter for completing the necessary paperwork. The Executive recommended that Subscriptions and honoraria to stay the same, as the Society has a healthy financial balance. Many thanks to Dick Watson for displaying the wonderful collection of Fuchsia Lore, great to see that the interesting collection will remain amongst fuchsia members all over New Zealand.

Election of Executive for 2018: Mary Hull President; Catherine Nunweek Vice President; Peter O’Hara Treasurer; Gwen Thomson Secretary; Doug Burrus Editor.

I’m very thankful to have a wonderful team to support me, with Peter in charge of the Society’s finances, Gwen as our very capable Secr.etary, and our very important Link to the Society is Doug as Editor with Frances Burrus assisting. It is great to have Catherine back on to the Executive as Vice President. I look forward to forthcoming developments with our website under the leadership of Quang. To Frances a big thank you for your leadership over the last 5 years, you will be a hard act to follow.

The Link, as its name states, is the Link that keeps the National Fuchsia Members up to date with news from the Fuchsia Groups. Please support Doug with lots of contributions, photos, handy hints or your favourite fuchsia. Quang, as the new webmaster, would also welcome contributions for the website. As Quang quoted “Yes indeed the Adventure now begins.”

To our Registrar Chas Wilcox a big thank you for undertaking the role of Registrar for the last 2 years. Unfortunately, due to work commitments, Chas is no longer able to look after this role. Elaine Baldwin, who is enjoying better health, has kindly offered to help out with the Registrar position. Welcome back on board Elaine. Elaine will be looking forward to hearing all about your Fuchsias.

Looking ahead to 2019 we thank the Wellington Fuchsia Society for volunteering to host the 35th AGM. More information will follow in the August Link.

Once again many thanks to Ashburton Fuchsia Group for hosting the 34t h AGM &

Fuchsiarama – a great weekend enjoyed by all. Take care

Yours in fuchsias

Mary Hull
