Hello from Waiuku

Franklin Fuchsia Group E

Hi everyone, as this is my first contribution to the Link as the president I am getting some help from our new secretary, Sylvia.

Well, March has been a busy month for us. On the 8th of March it was our 30th Birthday as a club. We had a celebration lunch at our local Cassy club, and Carol West our Treasurer made us a beautiful cake.

Ten of us from Waiuku travelled to Ashburton for the Fuchsiarama on the 15th We picked up a bus driven courtesy of Mary Hull, arriving at the Ashburton Hotel. We spent a pleasant afternoon getting to know a few people and catching up with some of the regulars.

On Friday morning we all set off on a bus trip. It was a very full day, firstly to Brian Glassey’s (the chicken man) and a look around his garden. An amazing array of dahlias, then on to Bentley restorers, and next Victoria Wood works to see the pole people,

With the Plains Museum at Tinwald, it was great day out.

Saturday morning being the AGM, it was so nice to see so many people there. As it was St Patrick’s day the dinner in the evening had the theme “Touch of Green” and everyone dressed up for it – what a great night!

On Sunday the head gardener at the hotel took us all for a walk around their neat and tidy grounds.

Thank you Ashburton Group for a great weekend.

We stayed on anther night at the Ashburton Hotel and on Monday morning we were on the road again. We called into Jim and Barbara Kane’s colorful garden, where we all left with gifts of Lily bulbs to take home. Then onwards to Moeraki Boulders (very impressive at close quarters).

Oamaru was our next stop where the old buildings are outstanding, then on to Dot Smith’s castle and gardens. We travelled onto Twizel, across two dams and spent the night at Lake Tekapo, another stunning place with a beautiful vista.

On Wednesday we headed back to Ashburton via Geraldine for some shopping.

Our trip ended with an adventurous journey home from the Auckland airport with one of our members holding our van door shut after a problem!!

A wonderful week away.

Last, but not least, a big thank you to Mary for being our organizer and driver again, and congratulations on her being elected as National President.

Regards to you all.
